Difference Between Intensive and Extensive properties with examples

the major Difference Between Intensive and Extensive properties is that Intensive properties are those physical properties that do not depend on the amount of matter while extensive properties are those physical properties that depend on the amount of matter.

Intensive Properties

  1. These are the macroscopic properties of the system which are independent of amount or quantity of material present in a system.
  2. These properties remain same whether system divided into two parts.
  3. Density, temperature, Viscosity are examples of intensive properties.

Extensive Properties

  1. These are the macroscopic properties of the system which are dependent on amount or quantity of a material present in the system.
  2. These properties become half when system divided into two parts.
  3. Mass, moles, volume, are the examples of extensive properties.
